Washington goalie Jose Theodore suffered an undisclosed injury in the first period of game against San Jose at Verizon Center and the team said he will not return. Rookie Semyon Varlamov started the second period for the team, despite getting five power-play opportunities in the first period. The Capitals quickly took a 3-1 lead early in the second period with costant goals from Alex Ovechkin.
Theodore may have been injured when he dove out of his crease through the period. Sharks forward Ryane Clowe also dove for the puck, and it remained loose until Theodore started to get up and finally saw it lying in front of him.
